Ireen Wüst has won an unexpected gold medal in the 1500 metre speed skating at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
The Dutch skater has not been having a particularly good season and earlier failed to win a medal in the 3000 metres, the event in which she won gold four years ago in Turin.
However, her time of 1 minute 56.89 seconds saw off the Canadian favourites Kristina Groves and Christine Nesbitt, who came second and sixth respectively.
Czech skater Martina Sablikova took the bronze.
Dutch skaters Margot Boer, Annette Gerritsen and Laurine van Riessen ended in fourth, seventh and 17th place.
