Sudanese trouser woman freed

Published on 8 September 2009 - 5:24pm
More about:

In Sudan, Lubna Hussein, the woman found guilty of wearing trousers in public, has been released after spending one day in prison. The former journalist had been jailed for a month after refusing to pay a fine equivalent to 140 euros, but the journalists' union has now paid the fine.

Prosecutors had called for the maximum sentence of 40 whiplashes to be imposed on Ms Hussein for wearing trousers in public in July. She worked for the United Nations which meant she enjoyed diplomatic immunity, but gave up her job to fight the case on principle.
