We have some bad news: The State We're In is being terminated. As many of you may know, Radio Netherlands Worldwide was hit with a drastic 70 percent cutback last year by the Dutch government. We were assured at that time by Radio Netherlands' outgoing management that the show was still going to be an integral part of Radio Netherlands, but those assurances didn't hold.
Subsequent changes in the organization's mandate towards a tighter focus on nations in the developing world, and a much slower-than-expected transition to new management have made it impossible for us to continue.
The State We're In exits with its head held high: it was the most broadcasted, downloaded and decorated program in the long history of Radio Netherlands Worldwide, and won praise from radio industry leaders from around the world.
It was heard in top public radio markets the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland and in select markets in India and Africa. Our overall audience reach was 12 million people. We will miss you and all the engaged, thoughtful responses you had to what we put on the air. It was a privilege bringing these stories - which sometimes included stories you told us - to light.
FYI: Our last original program will be produced at the end of October. There will be some repeat shows after that.
Greg Kelly, Editor TSWI

I have been a background listener to Radio Netherlands since the days of Shortwave. I have always found your service balanced and reasonable.
Well done and a fond farewell to those programs which are being chopped..
I do about it. TSWI's web and Facebook pages are still somewhat active. You can find out anything you need to know there.
I am so terribly disappointed to discover TSWI has been terminated! I have enjoyed your intelligent, informative, inspiring stories for several years, and will miss you very much. Thanks for the amazing talent and hard work your put into creating such a quality program.
At first I was confused and thought that after two months away, November and December, was not sure if tswi was on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, I usually listened and learned a lot from this wonderful program.
Decided to look online, as I had not listened to this program on npr.org this year, and wanted to know if its schedule had changed. Thanks for a great, instructive radio program. Sorry it has been terminated.
Time to move to another "State" and pick up where you left off. I loved your show and hope to listen again to your great, high quality broadcasting gem of a show. http://powerrangergames.blogspot.com/
Hi. I visited your site for the first time and just been your fan. Keep posting as I’m gonna come to read it everyday ! Thanks.
Oh, how I will miss you! Though I was a relatively new listener (just over a year ago I discovered you), I will miss your show and its superlative content. :( Sorry you are done before you were really done.
I have enjoyed your program so very much. It has connected me to the whole world. In particular, I enjoyed your series on China because it helped me to understand that world.
I can't tell you how disappointed I am that your show will end.
Your level of journalism and caring and concern for the human condition is remarkable.
Thank you so much. If there is any way that the show can continue, please let me and other readers know how we can help.
I think it's great we can listen to RNW many ways we couldn't just two decades ago including downloading podcast and listening on our time, not their schedule.
I am so sad to hear about this. You produced material that was as finely wrought as it was compelling. I hope everyone involved continues to do this work in some capacity. A round of applause to all involved.
You will be greatly missed. Thank you. Thanks for the memories of your final performance. What, you are a spectacular. It gives me hope is in short supply, now in the United States, the poor the possibility of "ŕ" must win President Barack Obama a second term, but racism is so rampant in this country, many can not tell their own good from their prejudices. I hope our good luck.
Your show is/was incredible. I just heard that you had you're last show and am extremely sad. I hope that you can restart sometime in the future. Your focus on people around the world covering all types of situations was outstanding. I loved listening to your show!
this is terrible news. i'm just getting to know tswi.org and love it. maybe npr in the us or cbc canada will want to pick you up? oh dear, oh dear.
This was a remarkable show - one that showed us the common humanity we all share. Through storytelling, TSWI did connect us to the most remote communities, even those within our own countries. I think it did a remarkable job to bring those worlds to light: I hope that the future is bright for those who worked on the show as well as those who fought at radio netherlands to prevent these cuts from being more drastic.
Storytelling like this is one of the most effective ways to making our world more human. Smaller. More connected.
A true loss-

This is heartbreaking news. TSWI was an absolutely superb program. While I understand the stressful financial circumstances that led to its termination, we have lost an important and unique voice for human rights and human dignity. Sincere thanks to the TSWI staff, good luck to them all, and I hope against hope that this program and its talented staff can somehow carry on this important work in spite of difficult times.
Missing TSWI, Radio Netherland's contribution to the rest of the world. Please return. I venture to say that many of us are willing to help with funding.
I listened to you from Eureka, California, a community in it's own rural setting far from the rest of the world. Thank you for a heart felt connection to a world wide reality. I'm very sad about Radio Netherland's decision to discontinue this program that I received as a precious gift.
I just learned that "The State We're In" is being shut down by Radio Netherlands. What a shame. It was the most literate, thought-provoking show on the radio anywhere, and I would struggle to awake at 1:00 a.m. Monday mornings to here it broadcast on CBC Overnight in Canada, or more likely, check out the podcast.
What a poor decision by Radio Netherlands!
I'm so terribly sorry that you have lost your show. I hope that all the staff is able to continue sucessful careers. I will miss you guys and will miss your show that gives such inciteful experiences of people around the world.
Oh, what bad news, indeed. It seems to me that even when money is down this is NOT the show to kick off the air. It is such a great show and I enjoy listening to it on KALW, a public radio station here in the San Francisco Bay Area, Northern CA.
Please reconsider and let's keep this show in the air.
Thanks for all of your great work, we LOVE RADIO NETHERLANDS, AND "THE STATE WE'RE IN".
Dear Producers of The State We're In,
Would you consider self-funding TSWI through crowdfunding?

I know that it's not the 'hard money' you had until the program was cancelled. But it's something.
Good luck to all of the staff.
Mark Frautschi
I agree with Mark, companies like http://www.kickstarter.com/ are very interesting! At least you can keep the shows on the radio!
Sandra
I'll pledge to donate to help save the show. Your show has opened my mind to how so many others throughout the world live, their lifestyles, their religious faith, beliefs and so much more.
Dear Producers of The State We're In,
I will miss this extraordinary program. It was one of Europe's gifts to North America. I can only thank you for it and wish the staff well on what lies next for each of them. I am sure that the shock of the end of the program is far greater for them than for us in the audience.
Thank you,
Mark Frautschi
Your programme is one of the best - enlightened, fascinating stories - truly excellent interviewing. Really a world-leading team and show.
Extremely sad to hear the terrible news of the show's demise.
I literally cried hearing the news of the end of the show. There seems to be such an attack on enlightened programming and an onslaught of funding deficiencies. It is truly a shame.
I hope all of you find welcoming new homes in which your unique talents will be honored, appreciated and well paid.
TSWI's demise is absolutely horrific news. I recently discovered your series and find quality radio does not get any better. If it's truly the end of TSWI as we know it, the world will suffer greatly.
I always thought the Netherlands was above the worst in compromises...
it was the best radio thank you and i will miss you all....
I have only been a regular listener for about two years now. the program is re-broadcast on Monday mornings very early where i am. i listened to it on the NPR now broadcasts on the Sirrius Satalite radio.
I admit I was very shocked at hearing of the demise of the program. Quite saddened really. I have grown to look forward to the broadcast each week and will miss your show very much. Thanks for all the hard work and great shows.
Truly loved this show - woke up early ever Sunday just to listen to it - and set my mood for the day - inspiring and fulfilling - shameful it will not continue - bring it back!!!!
