US film and pop stars have led a huge fundraising appeal for Haiti's earthquake victims. The "Hope for Haiti Now" show, which was broadcast live across the world, was held in Los Angeles, New York and London.
It featured some 130 celebrities, including Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Wyclef Jean. The event had been organised by American actor George Clooney, who said the Haitian people had to know they were not alone. The show also featured survivors speaking of their ordeal and a reporter in Haiti talking about the relief effort. A number of celebrities answered donor calls.
It is not yet known how much money has been raised because the live show is now for sale and proceeds will also be donated. Several actors, including George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, have each donated one million dollars.
According to official figures, the earthquake, which registered 7.0 on the Richter scale, has killed at least 110,000 people. The UN puts this figure at 75,000.
