Sri Lanka to investigate its own offensive

Published on 31 May 2009 - 2:47pm
More about:

Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama says his country will investigate whether human rights were violated in the fighting against the Tamil Tigers. The minister says the Sri Lankan courts are perfectly able to do the job.

More than 25 years of civil war came to an end this month, when the Tamil movement for independence in northeast Sri Lanka was finally beaten. Tens of thousands lost their lives and hundreds of thousands lost everything they own as 280,000 people were forced to flee the fighting.

The United Nations and Amnesty International have called for an independent investigation into human rights violations during the Sri Lankan offensive.
