Special rules for Dutch Muslim employees during Ramadan?

Headaches, exhaustion and loss of concentration. Problems that nearly 80 percent of working Muslims in the Netherlands say they suffer from during the holy month of Ramadan. A Dutch trade union group is calling on employers to make special agreements with their Muslim employees for the holy month of fasting.  

Ramadan has begun, meaning observant Muslims will neither eat nor drink between sunrise and sunset. It’s not always an easy period for working Dutch Muslims. It can be a challenge to put in a long day at work without food or drink while it’s business as usual for your mostly non-Islamic colleagues who will be making the same demands of you.  

A survey carried out by the youth wing of the FNV trade union federation found that most Muslims would appreciate being able to make alternative working arrangements with their employers.  But virtually none of them bring up the issue because they’re worried about discrimination or even that they’ll be putting their jobs at risk. Chairperson Ijmert Muilwijk stresses that this is not about Muslims getting extra days off work, but about obliging employers to offer solutions such as flexible working hours, adjusted rosters or the chance to take holiday days.

The proposal has led to a heated debate on internet. Critics posting on the news site Powned say it’s up to Muslims to solve their own problems without causing problems for others. “Just cut salaries by half for the month.  Adjust the pay to fit the performance!”  is one comment.

Money/business is important. But tolerance is also important. And I do believe the last one can provide a better answer if we are getting a difficult situation. Lets working and living together in this beautiful earth. One day, a believer might need a help from non believer. The other day a non believer might also need a hand from a believer.

Well, the holy month of Ramadan is the time for Muslims to obey the rules of fasting throughout the day and spend their maximum time in prayers. they must be treated with sympathy during this time.

Maybe in their country thats fair enough but if they are going to live here then they need to adopt our way of life. We dont get days off and special work conditions because we choose to starve ourself and neither should they if they want a job in our country. I know muslim's certainly wouldnt change their rules and workplace conditions to suit us! Do a full days work at 100% capacity or give the job to someone who can!

Holland is one of the world's free(est) countries. No one is forcing anyone to live or work there. A choice of religion and the obligations that religion brings with it is also not imposed on anyone. What gives a minority the right to impose their religious beliefs or obligations, directly or indirectly, on the majority? It seems to me that any special treatment for Muslims during Ramadan in a non-Muslim country is ludicrous. As Holland (and all its workers) also enjoys one of the world's most liberal holiday / non-work arrangements, perhaps Ramadan should be the time when Muslims request their time off work.

Muslims have been fasting in generations without any help of employers of anybody from outside. these people calling themselfs "Anonymous" and typing sycustic comments should read once more and understand the article. I believe muslims have a strong faith how hard the work will be on their fasting they have proven them selves as in Canada they fast 16 hours day work hard and still keep fasting. all muslims in Natherland keep the spirit.

we dont need any favour from anyone,we do fasting for our allah & he knows very well better than others about us =, and im very much sure n confident about this that our beloved allah will take care of our health & even he will give us more energy to work at our roles provided by any of our seniors at office.
i request you to plz dont comment about our fasting and dont underestimate our energy during fasting if someone does it im ready to accept his/hers challenge during fasting.

Millions of Muslims work very hard for their employers throughout the world and do not not ask for any special consideration from their employers. Allah expects you to give a full days work for a full days pay.

Let them work second or third shift if that is an option, but if I were in such a situation, I would expect the shift change to be permanent unless the other employee were single and just did not care when he or she worked.

it says right in the article that they, the muzzies, don't want to ask for special arrangements for "fear of losing their job"... that right there is proof that THEY know that it is a problem that hampers their performance at work. they are in the wrong and THEY KNOW IT!!!

screw special arrangements... do the job efficiently and sufficiently or leave... their religion is their choice, not the employers choice.... they employer is there to run a business and make profit... not a picnic for fun and games. lets examine the level of practicality to their religion if it is so problematic for them..... <<< DUH >>>... address the real problem instead of making special arrangements.

Brother one may not be able to do the work efficiently despite doing anything but he may turn up the best performer later..All they may need is a little help. If we don't understand that it's not humane and we are not entitled to be called 'HUMAN'. Nobody is perfect.

If muslims experience problems at work during ramadan than that's their problem, they wanted to fast in the first place. Maybe they should stop fasting instead of asking for special treatment from their employers.

Those who expect employers to paid a full days wages for part time work are the bigots. Ramadan is for the Believers and not the non-Believers. Don't force innocent non-Believers into paying employees for their religious beliefs.
