Spanish police discover van of explosives

Published on 10 January 2010 - 12:47pm
More about:

Spanish police have discovered a van full of explosives in the northwest town of Zamora. It's believed the explosives may have been destined for the Basque separatist group ETA.

The van was pulled over by the police during routine checks. The driver and his passenger overpowered the police officers and escaped with their police vehicle. They were later arrested in Portugal.

It is not clear whether the explosives were actually intended for delivery elsewhere or whether the van itself was supposed to be detonated.

On Saturday, two suspected ETA members were arrested near the French town of Clermont Ferrand. The man and woman were picked up in a remote area, where police suspect they had a secret weapon depot.
