Spain and Venezuela have issued a joint declaration condemning every form of terrorism.
The statement brings an end to tensions that erupted between the two countries after a Spanish magistrate accused Venezuela of supporting two terrorist organisations: FARC in Colombia and ETA in Spain’s Basque Country. The magistrate, Eloy Velasco, said Venezuela had helped both groups to plot possible attacks on Spanish soil.
In a bid to reduce the tension, Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos met Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez on Thursday. Afterwards, Mr Chávez said he understood the Spanish concerns.
By issuing the declaration, Venezuela wants to make it clear that it in no way cooperates with either ETA or FARC, and that it rejects all the activities of both organisations.
