The Spanish government has agreed that pilot Julio Poch can be extradited to Argentina. He is accused of having taken part in "death flights" during the military dictatorship in Argentina, when opponents of the regime were flown out to sea and then thrown out of the aircraft.
After studying his file, the Spanish government concluded there was no reason to turn down the extradition request submitted by Argentinian judge Sergio Torres, who is investigating crimes against humanity committed during the dictatorship, which lasted from 1976 to 1983. However, the final decision will be made by a judge in the capital Madrid, most likely in January.
Julio Poch, a commercial pilot for Dutch airline Transavia, was recently arrested at Valencia airport one day before he was due to retire. An Argentinian who lived in the Netherlands for many years, Mr Poch allegedly told colleagues about his role in the death flights.
