SP leader Jan Marijnissen to leave parliament

Published on 20 March 2010 - 12:19pm
More about:

Socialist Party leader Jan Marijnissen says he will not return to parliament after the elections due on 9 June.

On the party's site, Mr Marijnissen describes the move as a logical consequence of his decision two years ago to resign as chairman of the parliamentary party. Citing health reasons, in 2008 he handed the post over to Agnes Kant, who recently resigned herself.

Under his 16-year leadership, the SP grew considerably, winning 25 seats in the parliamentary elections of 2006.

Mr Marijnissen, 57, will remain party leader. He says he can't think of anything more valuable than serving society.
