Twelve South American countries are to pay 300 million dollars into a fund for the reconstruction of Haiti following January's earthquake. This was decided at a meeting of UNASUR, the union of South American countries, in the Ecuadorian capital Quito.
The 12 UNASUR countries will contribute 100 million dollars themselves, while the remaining 200 million will be borrowed from the Inter-American Development Bank. The aid is not only meant to provide immediate relief, but should also be used to help Haiti to get back on its feet.
The quake of 12 January killed over 200,000 people and caused mass destruction, particularly in the capital of Port-au-Prince.

It should be left to the Latin/Caribbean nations to help Haiti - not the US, France, Canada or Germany, who have caused enough misery throughout too many years.
Vera, the entire world should be helping! Do you have a grandfather by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge?
