Some 450,000 displaced in the Philippines

Published on 28 September 2009 - 11:21am
More about:

The torrential rains from Tropical Storm Ketsana have killed at least 100 people in the Philippines. Dozens of people are still missing. More than 80 percent of the capital Manila, which has a population of 12 million, is submerged.

Twenty-five nearby provinces are also affected by the floods and torrential rains. Some 450,000 people have been displaced by the floods.

The rainfall in Manila is the heaviest in more than 40 years. The Filipino army has sent helicopters and rubber boats in an attempt to rescue residents of the capital. The government says its relief services have been overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster.
