The radical Somali Islamist rebel leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys has told Reuters news agency that reports that he had been seriously injured or killed are propaganda. He said: "You can see that I am physically healthy and fit."
Pro-government fighters had claimed that Sheikh Aweys was killed during fighting for control of the town of Wabho on Saturday.
Sheikh Aweys returned to Somalia in April after his rebel group, Hizbul Islam, was defeated by Ethiopian forces in 2006. The United States and the United Nations consider Sheikh Aweys a terrorist because of his ties with al-Qaeda.
