Somali pirates end tanker hijack

Published on 18 January 2010 - 11:25am
More about:

Somali pirates have ended their hijack of the Greek supertanker VLCC Maran Centaurus. They did so one day after a plane dropped a ransom of 3.5 million euros on its deck. The tanker’s 28 crewmembers are all said to be unharmed.

The tanker was seized on 29 November 2009. Built in 1995, it is one of the largest ships ever hijacked and is carrying two million barrels of crude. That is equivalent to the daily output of some of the world's top oil producers. Pirate sources say it is still anchored off the Somali coast, near the town on Harardhere.

A Somali negotiator announced the amount of the ransom, an amount that has not been confirmed by the ship’s owner.
