In many parts of northeast Spain, roads remain blocked and power supplies cut following Monday's heaviest snowfall in the region for 25 years.
The border crossings between France and Spain at Le Perthus and La Jonquera will remain closed until further notice. Up to 40 main highways are also closed. More than 6000 people are stranded in the Pyrenees as a result. Some 4000 trucks are stuck and about 2000 passengers are awaiting help in a train in the department of Aude.
In Barcelona city, snow and ice have brought much of the city to a standstill with 200,000 households without electricity in Girona. Snowfalls of up to 50 centimetres have been forecast for the worst-affected areas of the region of Catalonia, prompting the regional government to close schools. The city's metro system stayed open throughout the night to help stranded commuters get home after bus and suburban train services were suspended.
