SMS from under Indonesia quake rubble

Published on 3 October 2009 - 10:49am
More about:

Rescue workers in the Indonesian city of Padang have received a text message from someone trapped beneath the rubble of the collapsed Ambacang Hotel. Tapping sounds have also been heard at the site, where the authorities suspect at least eight people are still buried.

Although telephone service has been disrupted in the area since it was hit by a powerful earthquake on Wednesday, text messages do occasionally still get through. A man and his wife were pulled alive from under the ruins of their house after sending a message.
