Slovenia drops veto of Croatian EU membership

Published on 11 September 2009 - 3:28pm
More about:

Slovenia is prepared to immediately withdraw its veto against Croatia's joining the European Union. The move follows talks between Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor and his Croatian counterpart Jadranka Kosor.

The two leaders reached agreement on the 18-year dispute over their countries' land and sea borders. The border problem was caused by the break-up in the 1990s of Yugoslavia, from which the two countries seceded.

Slovenia became a member of the EU in 2004 and Croatia hopes to follow suit in 2010 or 2011. Sweden holds the EU's rotating presidency and its Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeld says the EU was delighted the membership talks with Croatia could go ahead.
