Skimming on the increase in the Netherlands

Published on 7 April 2010 - 11:03am
More about:

Skimmers stole around 36 million euros last year in the Netherlands. The Dutch Banking Association (NVB) says this was an increase of five million euros compared with 2008.

Skimming is a type of fraud which involves copying the magnetic strip from a credit card or debit card. There are numerous methods but among the most common are scanning or photo devices attached to ATMs or ticket machines.

A total of 32 thousand cards were skimmed last year and an average of 1100 euros per card was stolen from bank accounts.

The NVB, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the police have announced they intend to crack down on credit and debit card fraud. They will be relying partly on the international exchange of information aimed at the earlier detection of criminal networks.
