The US business magazine Fortune has named Royal Dutch Shell the largest company in the world.
In its annual rankings of the world’s most successful companies, the 'Fortune 500', the magazine awarded the top spot to the Dutch-British oil concern. In 2008, Shell was ranked third in the list.
Last year’s number one, the US retail giant Walmart, has slipped to third place. Second place has gone to the US energy company ExxonMobil. One other Dutch company made it into the top 100: the financial institution ING was ranked eighth.
Fortune bases its rankings on yearly sales figures.
