French President Nicolas Sarkozy has suffered serious losses in the second and last round of voting for the regional elections.
According to preliminary results, the left-wing parties have jointly won 52 percent of the vote. While Sarkozy’s UMP only gained 35 percent and Jean-Marie Le Pen’s Front National ten percent.
The ballot is an indication of the falling popularity of the president, partly due to increasing unemployment.
Turnout for the second round of voting was slightly higher than for the first round at 49 percent.
