Two United States envoys have arrived in Myanmar for talks with the military junta and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. It is the highest level US visit to the totalitarian state in 14 years.
US President Barack Obama’s administration recently shifted US policy away from purely isolating Myanmar, the former Burma, towards seeking dialogue.
The envoys are to meet Prime Minister Thein Sein on Tuesday, and visit Ms Suu Kyi on Wednesday. The opposition leader has spent almost 14 of the past 20 years under house arrest, and recently had her detention extended by 18 months.
