Senior athletes break records at Senior Games

At the 2009 Senior Games in Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland province, senior athletes have broken several records.

In the 60 to 64 age group, swimmer Ale van der Veen shattered three records, including those on the 100 and 50 metres butterfly stroke. Rietje Dijkman, aged 70, won the long jump and the 200 metre sprint championship. Ten years her senior, Anneke Logtenberg proved fastest on the 100 metre breast stroke.

The oldest participant in the Games was 100-year-old tennis player Roger Gentilhomme.

The five-day Senior Games in the Dutch province of Zeeland are an international sports event, participated in by some 2,000 athletes aged over 50 from more than 30 countries. Seventeen sports are represented.

Friday is the last day of the 2009 games.
