A 41-year-old man infected with the Mexican flu has died on Gran Canaria, one of the Spanish Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
It is the second death on Spanish territory from the H1N1 virus. The man, who was admitted to hospital in the island's capital Las Palmas on Thursday, was also suffering from other health problems.
The number of people infected with the H1N1 virus worldwide has now passed the 100,000 mark. Altogether, almost 450 people have died, most of them in the United States, Mexico and Argentina.
In Europe, the worst affected country is Great Britain, where 14 people have now died. British health authorities say it almost feasible to refer to an H1N1 epidemic in both London and the West Midlands.
In Germany, the virus has now affected the entire country. It has just been detected in the state of Saarland, in a woman who had recently been on holiday in Mallorca.
In the Netherlands, the number of infections remains relatively low, at just 150.
