Police in the Ugandan capital Kampala have clashed for a second day running with ethnic Baganda demonstrators. Protesters set fire to tyres and police fired live bullets, killing at least five people.
The unrest is the result of a conflict between the Ugandan government and King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, the informal ruler of the Buganda kingdom. The king had intended to visit the town of Kayunga, the scene of a conflict over land between the Baganda tribe and other ethnic groups. The king has since postponed his trip. Buganda is one of Uganda's four former kingdoms. With the country's independence in 1962 the kings were forced to cede much of their power to the central government. But many in the four kingdoms continue to cling to their traditions and culture.
