Scientists find skin stem cell

Published on 12 March 2010 - 6:47pm
More about:

Researchers at the Dutch University of Utrecht have found the stem cell responsible for forming skin tissue, the Utrecht Medical Centre announced on Friday. A team of Dutch and Swedish scientists discovered the cells in the hair follicles of mice.

Even though the study was conducted on mice, the scientists believe similar results are possible on humans as the proteins and cells involved are nearly identical. The cells could possibly be used to accelerate burn victims' wound repair. The researchers also hope to use the cells to grow skin transplants in a laboratory.
