Russian prison and police services' shake up

Published on 24 December 2009 - 9:56pm
More about:

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has announced tough reforms to the police and prison services. Earlier this month, he dismissed 20 prison governors.

The president says Russia's penal system has remained unchanged for decades and that it is high time reforms were made.

Among the reasons for the move is the death of prominent lawyer Sergei Magnitsky who had been in remand for a year. His requests for medical treatment were denied.

Top brass in the police are also in Mr Medvedev's sights following a number of recent scandals involving corruption and abuse of power in the service.
