Russian president sets tone for Obama visit

Published on 5 July 2009 - 11:24am
More about:

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says the United States should scrap its plans to build a missile shield in Eastern Europe if it wants an agreement on nuclear arms control.

His comments come on the eve of a visit by US President Barack Obama. On Monday, Mr Obama will travel to Moscow to renegotiate a nuclear arms control deal to replace the START agreement concluded in 1991. President Medvedev says the nuclear arms negotiations cannot be separated from the US missile shield.

The two presidents will also discuss the current situation in Afghanistan.
