Russian judge gunned down in Ingushetia

Published on 10 June 2009 - 1:37pm
More about:

In the Russian Republic of Ingushetia, a top judge has been shot dead.

Gunmen opened fire on Aza Gazgirejeva's car in the largest town of Nazran, after she had taken her children to school. The deputy chairwoman of the Supreme Court died of her wounds in hospital. Six others were injured in the attack, including a one-year-old baby.

The motives for the killing are not clear, but authorities say the assault was probably work-related. Violence by insurgents against the authorities has risen in Ingushetia, where poverty and government crackdowns have provided a recruiting ground for militants. Ms Gazgirejeva's predecessor was shot dead one and a half years ago.
