Runaway sailor girl arrives back in Netherlands

Published on 22 December 2009 - 9:01am
More about:

Teenage sailor girl Laura Dekker is back in the Netherlands following her disappearance.

The 14-year-old arrived at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on a flight from the Netherlands Antilles on Tuesday morning. She was received by police officers and the Dutch Child Care Bureau. Police will question the girl and then pass her on to the bureau.

Laura was reported missing on Friday, and on Sunday was spotted on the Caribbean island of St Maarten, where she was detained by the police. It remains unclear how the girl got to the island. Laura was made a ward of court in October when she wanted to set out on a solo sailing trip around the world, with the support of her father.
