Rotterdam preparing bid to host 2028 Olympics

Published on 30 June 2009 - 2:44pm
More about:

Rotterdam Council is supporting local initiatives to host the 2028 Olympic Games in the city. Rotterdam says it has a tradition of major sporting events, citing examples like next year's departure of the Tour de France and the Athletics World Championship.

National sports body NOC*NSF has for years been trying to get a Dutch city to make a bid for hosting the 2028 Olympics. The Rotterdam plan may be discussed by the cabinet on Friday.

If a bid is decided on, the bidbook will have to be presented to the IOC in 2018. Rotterdam's eternal rival, the capital Amsterdam, has let it be known it may also try and be a candidate for hosting the Games in 2028, exactly one century after the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.
