RNW sends 'radio in a box' to Chile

Published on 4 March 2010 - 9:11pm
More about:

Radio Netherlands Worldwide is sending two mobile radio stations to Chile.

They will be sent to Radio Universidad Ténica Federico Santa Maria, which has been a partner of RNW for many years. The action is intended to contribute to the restoration of sources of information following the recent earthquake.

The mobile stations will go to two radio stations, still to be chosen, in small coastal towns in the central Maule region, the part of Chile worst-affected by 27 February's massive earthquake and ensuing tsunami. RNW's General Director Jan Hoek says the choice of small coastal towns was made to complement the Chilean government's emphasis on reconstruction of the large cities and main highways.

The mobile radio stations, also known as "radio in a box" are specially designed for temporary use in countries where local stations have been damaged or destroyed by natural disasters. The Radio in a Box measures less than a cubic metre and includes an FM transmitter, mixing desk, microphones, CD player and laptop computer.

RNW sent mobile radio stations to Indonesia after the earthquake in September last year and to Haiti in January this year.

Here's a Chilean television report in Spanish about the story.
