The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics after defeating Madrid in the final round of voting among International Olympic Committee members gathered in the Danish capital Kopenhagen.
Earlier, Chicago and Tokyo had been eliminated in previous rounds. The candidate cities had sent a host of prominent figures for last-minute lobbying. Among them was US President Barack Obama, a former resident of Chicago. The Brazilian delegation included President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and football legend Pelé.
