Rijksmuseum to receive Spanish award

Published on 22 January 2010 - 9:24pm
More about:

Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum is to receive, along with a number of other museums, an important award from the Spanish government for helping save part of Spain's art collection during the country's Civil War between 1936 and 1939.

At the time, the Rijksmuseum was part of an international committee that successfully led efforts to save art from destruction. Other museums that formed part of the committee included the Louvre in Paris and the Tate Gallery in London.

The award ceremony will take place in Madrid's Prado museum on Monday. Coinciding with the event, the Prado will host an exhibition of the art saved by the committee.
