Restrictions lifted on Pakistani nuclear scientist

Published on 28 August 2009 - 4:59pm
More about:

A court in Islamabad has lifted the last restrictions on a suspected nuclear spy. The house arrest of the nuclear scientist, Abdul Qadeer Khan, was lifted in February, but he was still required to report regularly to the authorities.

In 2004 Mr Khan admitted selling nuclear secrets to Iran, North Korea and Libya. Later his withdrew his confession.

In the past he worked in the ultracentrifuge plant in the Dutch town of Almelo, where he is believed to have stolen the technology required to enrich uranium.

In his own country, he is a hero as many people believe that Pakistan would not have been able to build its nuclear weapons without his knowledge.
