Renewed fighting in Darfur

Published on 25 February 2010 - 2:24pm
More about:

The Sudanese army fought with SLA rebels in Darfur the day after President Omar al-Bashir signed a ceasefire with the rebel group JEM. The armistice was signed on Tuesday.

Earlier this week the president referred to the agreement as "the beginning of the end of the war in Darfur”. The SLA claims that large numbers of government troops attacked the mountainous region of Jabel Marra on Wednesday, supported by fighter planes and helicopters.

Doctors without Borders says that 100,000 people have fled their homes in Sudan following the eruption of violence in the past few days.
