From this week's Earth Beat, a sound commentary from Earth Beat producer Anik See, who was invited to spend a winter month in an extremely isolated house in the remote Fljotsdalur Valley in eastern Iceland. She went anticipating the kind of silence she’d known before, but was stirred by what she found. Here’s her story of life in the silent zone.

We visit schools where the noise level becomes so high that we can hardly hear our own voice, then we really long for a golden quiet. But when at home, the eerie silence scares after sundown, when all the birds are asleep...We do need company and friendly-loving voices...Silence is gold but not always...;)....
I loved your piece about noise, I can relate.
I live in a relatively quiet place close to seattle but work in a tower with AC, phones, etc... it's nuts!
2 years ago I bought 40 acres in the mountains 1200m high, no noise, no neighbors, just piece and quiet. It is so refreshing to be able to just pitch my tent wherever I want, set my chair and read, meditate, do nothing... Everyone I brought there loved it, I am trying to convert people to quietness and it is a hard task :D
peace! -- Fabien
Sounds great. I could do that. But - Living in a tent, eh? What about mountain lions and bears?
