In the Dutch fishing village of Urk, a silent march will be held on Tuesday in memory of a murdered 14-year-old boy, Dirk Post.
The boy’s body was found by passers-by in woods outside the village last week. On Friday and Saturday three local boys aged 15, 13 and 12 were arrested in connection with the murder. The exact cause of the boy’s death has not been made public. The funeral will also be held on Tuesday.
According to newspaper reports, the murder may have been linked to an argument over a girl between Dirk Post and one of the boys whom police are questioning. However, the mayor of Urk, Jaap Kroon, has declined to comment, and called on the press not to speculate about the background to the case. He says the police will release a further statement later this week.
The quiet village of Urk has been deeply shocked by the murder. Home to a tightly-knit and devoutly religious protestant community, the village was an island until the creation of the Northeast Polder in the late 1930s.
