Pro-Uighur protest in Amsterdam

Published on 9 July 2009 - 10:10am
More about:

Dozens of people demonstrated on Wednesday in Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam in support of the Uighur minority in western China. The police put the crowd at about 50 and the protest passed off without incident.

On Tuesday, there was trouble at a similar demonstration outside the Chinese embassy in The Hague and over 140 people were arrested. The demonstrators in Amsterdam wanted to publicise the plight of the victims of the unrest in Xinjiang province in western China, where recent ethnic violence has claimed the lives of at least 156 people.
