Pro-democracy group picks Dutch chairman

Published on 13 November 2009 - 2:49pm
More about:

A former prime minister of the Netherlands, Wim Kok, has been elected chairman of the Club of Madrid, a thinktank of former government leaders from fifty countries who are campaigning for stronger democracy worldwide. The group was formed in 2001.

The members meet regularly to discuss current affairs and to advise government leaders. At their annual conference in the Spanish capital this week, the club discussed the polical dimensions of the world economic crisis.

Wim Kok (Labour) headed two cabinets between 1994 and 2002; both were coalitions which promoted free trade and individual freedom.
