UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Dutch Princess Máxima a special advisor on accessible finance for everybody, including people in developing economies.
Princess Máxima, who is married to Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, will make her first address as an advisor at a meeting about microcredits on Tuesday.
Up to now she was a member of a UN advisory body on finances. As such she discussed obstacles preventing financial access with lawmakers and supervisory agencies in several countries. The princess will continue to visit countries in order to put her message across.
It is customary for Dutch royals to have advisory roles. Prince Claus, the late husband of Queen Beatrix, was an advisor to the Ministry of Development Cooperation. The queen's sister Princess Margriet served as President of the International Red Cross, and Prince Willem-Alexander is a member of the IOC and chairman of the UN Water and Sanitary Facilities advisory board.
Princess Máxima has been working for quite a while to open up the financial sector to people in developing countries. In large parts of Africa, for instance, it is still uncommon to have bank or savings accounts, or take out loans or insurances.
