Pressing for Freedom

Published on : 3 May 2013 - 1:51pm | By ((C) Julio Carrión Cueva)
More about:

Today, 3 May, is World Press Freedom Day, and this year the UN-led campaign is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

The theme for 2013 is ‘Safe to speak: Securing freedom of expression in all media’, with the emphasis on the need for safety for journalists as well as the challenges posed in ensuring digital freedom of expression.
This map, produced by Reporters Without Borders shows the situation with press freedom worldwide.

RNW is committed to promoting free speech in countries where it is repressed or under threat. Our journalists, working both independently and with media partners, produce multimedia content aimed at sparking discussion and making available information missing from local media. RNW operates at the limit of what is acceptable for some governments and has at times been blocked in China, Syria and Saudi Arabia.

Our content has also been removed on occasion by Facebook and while social media can play a positive role in advancing freedom of expression around the world, these platforms are governed by commercial concerns which bring their own form of censorship.

Freedom of speech refers to the right of the individual to express his views about matters of interest to him/her whilst freedom of the press would refer to the freedom of written word in printed form and that BOTH refer to the freedom of THOUGHT and are the outward expressions of our THOUGHTS.
