More about:

All papers devote ample space to Saturday’s bloodbath in a shopping centre in Alphen aan den Rijn. What to do now that Icelanders turn down a deal to pay back the Dutch and British after the Icesave debacle? And a chunk of Greek antiquity has been returned to the Greek authorities after 50 years.

Pages and pages are dedicated in today’s papers to Saturday’s bloodbath in Alphen aan den Rijn. De Telegraaf gives a detailed account of 20 minutes of “pure terror”. Trouw asks the question “Why?”. It reports the young man was suicidal and had psychiatric problems. AD goes a step further and quoting relatives reports that he was schizophrenic. The populist paper describes him as a gun lover and a loner who sought conflict.

So how could someone with psychiatric problems obtain a legal gun licence for five weapons and get hold of an illegal machine gun. The answer is simple: as long as he has not got into trouble with the police there is no reason not to issue a licence under Dutch law.

While most of the papers call the shooting “undutch” and draw attention to the international media reporting on the killings, nrc.next reminds its readers that there are regular shooting incidents in the Netherlands.

Plight of illegal aliens highlighted after self-immolation victim dies
While thousands hold a spontaneous wake for the victims of the bloodbath, a small commemoration was held in Amsterdam's Dam Square on Sunday for failed asylum seeker Kambiz Roustayi, who died after setting himself on fire earlier in the week.

Trouw reflects of the hopelessness among rejected asylum seekers. Last week, there were two suicide attempts in Schiphol’s detention centre for illegal aliens. Roman Catholic organisation Justitia and Pax, quoted in the paper, says detention always damages people. The Humanistic Association agrees, saying the rights of illegal aliens are violated by long-lasting and senseless periods of detention.

The regime in detention centres are often stricter in normal prisons, says Amnesty International. Detainees spend more hours in their cells, have no right to work, no right to education and are only allowed out if a member of the family dies.

Some illegal aliens try to prevent themselves being deported. But many others cannot be sent back because their own embassies refuse to facilitate their return. “The aliens have any prospects of a future taken from them. Their situation is hopeless.” As a result they become apathetic and angry.

Sahar “too western” to be deported to Afghanistan
Sahar, a 14-year-old girl from Afghanistan, and her family have finally been granted a residence permit by Immigration and Asylum Minister Gerd Leers. While Saturday’s papers report that the teenager is overjoyed, today de Volkskrant reflects on the political repercussions of the decision.

It comes after a report by the Foreign Ministry stating that children who have become too westernised have more chance of being victimised if they are forced to return to their country of origin. As a result, girls from Afghanistan between 10 and 18 who have been in the Netherlands for eight years and whose parents have not frustrated the asylum process may have their cases reconsidered.

Sahar came to the Netherlands at the age of four. Ten years later she is doing well at grammar school and is fully integrated. Sahar made the headlines when her schoolfriends decided to seek media attention for her plight. Since then her case has yo-yoed from the courts granting her permission to stay in the Netherlands and the minister insisting she and her family should leave.

The Freedom Party (PVV) which favours stricter immigration measures appears to be in disarray over the matter. Freedom Party MP Sietse Fritsma says he “can appreciate the minister’s decision”, but fellow PVV MP Hero Brinkman calls westernisation “a completely crazy way of judging whether or not someone can stay here.”

In a way, MPs from other opposition parties appear to agree that the qualification is somewhat subjective. D66 says the criteria set out by the minister are unclear. Green Left MP Tofik Dibi wants to know what kind of political deal has been made with the minority government’s support partner the PVV. Both parties have called for an emergency debate on the issue. What? Another one?

Icelanders reject pay back deal again
In a referendum, Icelanders have once again rejected a deal to pay back the Netherlands and Great Britain for stepping in when the Icesave internet back crashed in 2008. Many of the bank’s account holders were Dutch and British.

De Volkskrant reports 60 percent of voters opposed the plan. The paper writes that the issue had split the country in two. The government, parliament, employers and unions backed the deal, because the continuing uncertainty is not good for the Icelandic economy. They also felt Iceland should take responsibility for the matter and restore relations with Europe.

However, ordinary Icelanders felt differently. They see it a as a matter of principle and do not want to bail the country out because of the actions of reckless bankers, who so far appear to have got away Scott free.

Nevertheless Reykjavik reassures us that the bank’s assets will cover 90 percent of the huge compensation bill, which amounts to 1. 3 billion for the Netherlands and 2.5 billion for Britain. However, the question remains, according to de Volkskrant, whether Iceland is legally obliged to compensate foreign savers to the tune of 20,000 euros each.

Meanwhile Trouw reports Dutch Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager wants to put the matter to the courts now that Icelanders have rejected being given until 2046 to pay the Dutch and the British back at a low interest rate. “I’m very disappointed that the Icesave deal did not make it,” says the minister.

Chunk of Greek antiquity returned after 50 years
The Dutch National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden has returned a piece of marble from the Acropolis back to the Greeks. The chunk of stone was taken by a tourist more than half a century ago. Just two years ago, the elderly man contacted the museum when he found the forgotten piece of ancient Greece in a box after clearing up his house.

The museum’s curator Ruurd Halbertsma visited the man, but could not accept the gift so he decided to return it at the first appropriate opportunity. An exhibition on Corfu provided the perfect moment. According to Mr Halbertsma most people don’t realise that it is illegal to take such souvenirs out of the country. Tourists could even face a prison sentence.

The 15 x 5 cm piece of marble is probably from the top of pillar from one of the famous temples. It probably doesn’t have any economic value writes the paper and won’t make it into an exhibition. But the Greek ambassador says he is very pleased, as there are lots of lots of pieces like this all over the world, and “even the smallest piece of antiquity that is removed, hurts us Greeks.”

Discussion

I am surprised that these failed economic migrants ( asylum seekers ) did not turn up here in the UK.
In this madhouse we have millions of foreigners living it up at our taxpayers expense because our political elite are hell-bent on destroying our British way of life. In less than 40 years white ( shock, horror ) British will be in a minority in this once great country. Europe is fast heading for utter chaos when Islamic Sharia Law will eventually be declared, as it must, due to the Muslim sky-high birth rates.
Our stupid PM David Cameron has followed that other traitor, the multi-millionaire Tony Blair, by demanding that Turkey be allowed to join the EU Superstate.... with its 80m and 99% Muslim population.
Talk about national suicide, we have the mass suicide of our European civilisation on hand. Europeans must stand united against this and support or join their nationalist parties in their own countries, either that or we are finished within 20 - 40 years.
What a legacy to our grandchildren.
