President's supporters in Mauritania's cabinet

Published on 12 August 2009 - 10:13am
More about:

In Mauritania, Prime Minister Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf, a former diplomat, has formed a government. He was named prime minister by President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who came to power in a coup last year.

President Abdel Aziz, a former general, won presidential elections just over a fortnight ago. His opponents say there was widespread electoral fraud and the European Union is also highly critical of how the poll was conducted.

The new government team contains few surprises, with most of the 27 posts going to Mr Abdel Aziz' supporters. There is one woman in the cabinet: Naha Mint Hamdi Ould Mouknass is the new foreign minister.
