In Honduras, President Manuel Zelaya has failed to return to his country one week after he was forced into exile.
The plane swooped over the runway at Tegucigalpa airport in a dramatic attempt to land. Army vehicles blocked the runway at the orders of the new government. Reportedly the pilots were told that the plane would be shot down if it tried to land. "If I had a parachute I would immediately jump out of the plane," said the president who was accompanied by journalists on the flight.
At least two people were killed and two others injured when soldiers and police used tear gas and fired shots to disperse tens of thousands of the president's supporters who tried to enter the heavily-militarised airport.
On Sunday evening, Mr Zelaya left Washington to return to his country, eventually his plane landed in the Nicaraguan capital Managua.
Referendum
President Zelaya was forced into exile just over a week ago on the eve of a referendum over a change in the constitution to allow the president to serve a second four-year term in office.
On Saturday the Organisation of American States suspended Honduras after an ultimatum to reinstate the president expired. This is the first time a country has been suspended from the OAS since the exclusion of Cuba in 1962.
Isolation
The new leaders in Honduras are becoming increasingly isolated. International pressure is set to increase. Venezuela has already suspended shipments of oil. Nevertheless, OAS chief Jose Miguel Insulza said he is prepared to continue diplomatic steps. In a first sign of possible dialogue, the interim officials said they had put forward an offer for dialogue to the OAS "in good faith".
Mr Zelaya has appealed to the army not to use their weapons against the Honduran people. It is not know how many people have been injured or detained in clashes in the past week. Media blackouts and nighttime curfews have increased tension in the poor Latin American country. On Sunday, the interim officials extended the nighttime curfew to prevent people congregating on the streets.
