Portuguese police have discovered 1500 kilos of explosives in the garage of a rented house, which was being used as base for the Basque separatist movement ETA. At first just 500 kilos of explosives were reported to be found.
The house was raided earlier this weekend following a tip from neighbours. The Spanish authorities believe the house in the middle of Portugal was being used to prepare bomb attacks. Alongside the explosives police found maps of Spanish cities Madrid, Cádiz and San Fernando.
ETA has used France as a base for attacks in Spain for decades. The authorities believe ETA has now switched to Portugal.
At the beginning of last month, two ETA members were arrested in Portugal driving a van loaded with explosives towards a Spanish police barracks just over the border. The two men will be extradited soon.
