Police to use cameras during New Year

Published on 29 December 2009 - 11:00pm
More about:

Ten Dutch police forces are equipping officers with cameras for New Year's Eve. It is hoped that footage of violent incidents will improve the likelihood of tracing and prosecuting those responsible.

Mini-cameras will be attached to uniforms, helmets, while cameras mounted on police cars will be controlled from incident rooms. Images will be able to be studied immediately.

During the trial, officers will be monitored to see whether those equipped with cameras feel safer. Attention will also be paid to whether members of the public behave better knowing that they are being filmed.
