This year’s prestigious Charlemagne Prize has been awarded to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Every year since 1950, the German city of Aachen has awarded the prize to the person it considers has done the most for European unity. This year the Aachen jury selected Mr Tusk in recognition of his many years’ dedication to close cooperation between Poland and the European Union.
They called Mr Tusk a great European, who as far back as the 1980s had worked hard to bring East and West closer together. He has been prime minister since 2007 and now wants Poland to introduce the euro.
In previous years the Charlemagne Prize has been awarded to such individuals as Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, former United States president Bill Clinton and former Dutch foreign minister and head of NATO Joseph Luns.
