Plea to save rain forest

Published on 6 June 2009 - 6:02pm
More about:

Prominent party members of Brazil's governing Workers' Party have asked President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to veto legislation passed by both houses of parliament.

The legislation would grant large tracts of the Amazon rain forest to Brazilian farmers who seized the land illegally. The land in question is larger than France.

Opponents of the legislation say it would reward the illegal occupation and destruction of the rain forest. Last year 12,000 square kilometres of rain forest were deforested by local cattle farms.

12,000 square metres of rain forest destroyed last year? Should that read "12,000 square kilometers"?

This legislation is remarkable under da Silva's presidency. I have no doubt that he will overturn this landgrab proposal at the first opportunity, if only to be consistent with his voter base of pro-labour and the poor. It is also an amazing surprise that the government of Brazil has not yet charted and catalogued it's rain forest lands sufficienty and completely enough, to have prevented a frontier style land rush, in a country which should be properly zoned for land use and conservation. This clearly has to advance in da Silva's agenda of priorities.

No, we are short sighted; penny wise, pound foolish and selfish.

We are digging our own grave and yet we continue to destroy our planet. Are we blind? Are we dumb?
