There were 406 piracy attacks in 2009, 113 more than in 2008 and the highest number for six years.
The International Maritime Bureau says the increase necessitates "a heightened response from governments and their agencies best able to reduce and contain these risks to human life and property". More than 1000 crew members were taken hostage in the attacks and eight of them were killed.
Most of the attacks by far were carried out off the Somali coast, which is currently being patrolled by an international naval force. However, the IMB says that other African waters, including off the Nigerian coast, also remain dangerous.
Piracy in the Strait of Malacca has been almost completely eradicated, with only two attacks reported last year. Indonesia, Malacca and Singapore jointly patrol the Strait.
