Philippines eases microcredit rules

The Philippine central bank will soon allow all banks to grant microcredit to farmers.

At present, only agricultural banks are allowed to give loans to farmers. The Philippines has decided to ease the rules because farmers face increased competition from abroad as the result of lower import tariffs on food.

The Philippine central bank has agreed to ease the microcredit regulations on condition that banks draw up guidelines to prevent farmers from not paying back their loans.
